Chapter Nineteen
Dani
I took Ryker into the living room while Dad slipped into the kitchen, and I was hit with a sudden, aching nostalgia. Some of the tension finally left my body and the remnants of adrenaline that Iâd been running on for days bottomed out. Here was a piece of home, and I breathed in the smell of it as I paused in the middle of the room. The apartment was nice, but it wasnât big. It had one bedroom, a living space that had little more than a counter separating it from the kitchen, and Dad had built a closet for me where I could keep some stuff. Right now, I was endlessly grateful for that fact as I opened the door and rifled through what clothes I had left there. I glanced up at Ryker. Obviously nothing I had was going to fit him.
âDad!â I called.
âYeah?â He was digging something out of the cabinets.
âCan Ryker borrow one of Tyâs shirts until I can get him something to wear?â I asked.
âI donât think Ty would mind. Iâll get him one in a minute. Why donât you guys clean up first,â Dad called back to me and Ryker raised an eyebrow.
âWho is Ty?â he asked.
I whispered, âItâs Dadâs boyfriend. Heâs been in my life for a long time, heâs a really cool dude and Iâll be forever thankful that he helped heal Dad after . . . after Mom. Iâm just waiting for one of these two dummies to propose.â
Dad came into the room with a shirt from the university radio station and handed it to Ryker. âHere, I think this one might fit you. Ty wonât miss it; he has a million work shirts.â
âWhere is Ty anyway?â I asked. âIs he asleep?â
âSisterâs house. They just installed her new greenhouse and he slept over. Should be back later to clean up before work.â
âAh.â
Ryker nodded and took a big T-shirt from Dad with the universityâs logo on it. He pulled it over his head, and it didnât fit too badly. Maybe just a little tight around the shoulders, but he wouldnât look strange if he went out in public.
I wasnât going to pretend that I didnât like watching Rykerâs shirtless chest and arms as he moved, but he pretended not to notice me staring. And as many times as I told myself it was just the newly forming bond between us, I knew underneath that I was just lying to myself. I thought Ryker was hot when Iâd landed in his spring and I thought he was hot now.
âHow big is this human?â Ryker asked, looking down at the shirt.
âHeâs not as tall as you are, but heâs built like a freight train.â
âWe have everything for pancakes,â Dad said, clearly switching topics. âDo you want to do this now or do you want a shower first?â
âLetâs do the pancakes,â I said. âMy last two weeks were hell and if I donât get something in my system and come up with a plan Iâm going to lose my mind.
