Chapter Nineteen

Dani

I took Ryker into the living room while Dad slipped into the kitchen, and I was hit with a sudden, aching nostalgia. Some of the tension finally left my body and the remnants of adrenaline that I’d been running on for days bottomed out. Here was a piece of home, and I breathed in the smell of it as I paused in the middle of the room. The apartment was nice, but it wasn’t big. It had one bedroom, a living space that had little more than a counter separating it from the kitchen, and Dad had built a closet for me where I could keep some stuff. Right now, I was endlessly grateful for that fact as I opened the door and rifled through what clothes I had left there. I glanced up at Ryker. Obviously nothing I had was going to fit him.

“Dad!” I called.

“Yeah?” He was digging something out of the cabinets.

“Can Ryker borrow one of Ty’s shirts until I can get him something to wear?” I asked.

“I don’t think Ty would mind. I’ll get him one in a minute. Why don’t you guys clean up first,” Dad called back to me and Ryker raised an eyebrow.

“Who is Ty?” he asked.

I whispered, “It’s Dad’s boyfriend. He’s been in my life for a long time, he’s a really cool dude and I’ll be forever thankful that he helped heal Dad after . . . after Mom. I’m just waiting for one of these two dummies to propose.”

Dad came into the room with a shirt from the university radio station and handed it to Ryker. “Here, I think this one might fit you. Ty won’t miss it; he has a million work shirts.”

“Where is Ty anyway?” I asked. “Is he asleep?”

“Sister’s house. They just installed her new greenhouse and he slept over. Should be back later to clean up before work.”

“Ah.”

Ryker nodded and took a big T-shirt from Dad with the university’s logo on it. He pulled it over his head, and it didn’t fit too badly. Maybe just a little tight around the shoulders, but he wouldn’t look strange if he went out in public.

I wasn’t going to pretend that I didn’t like watching Ryker’s shirtless chest and arms as he moved, but he pretended not to notice me staring. And as many times as I told myself it was just the newly forming bond between us, I knew underneath that I was just lying to myself. I thought Ryker was hot when I’d landed in his spring and I thought he was hot now.

“How big is this human?” Ryker asked, looking down at the shirt.

“He’s not as tall as you are, but he’s built like a freight train.”

“We have everything for pancakes,” Dad said, clearly switching topics. “Do you want to do this now or do you want a shower first?”

“Let’s do the pancakes,” I said. “My last two weeks were hell and if I don’t get something in my system and come up with a plan I’m going to lose my mind.
